Cannot Open Database Error

If the SA-Announce application does not have access to its database, login to SA-Announce fails and the following error is presented.

Error: Cannot open database “SA-Announce 2.0” requested by the login.  The login failed.
Login failed for user ‘DOMAIN\USER’.

This means database access is not authorized.

There are three basic steps to resolve this issue:

  • Verify Local Admin Rights on the SA-Announce server.
  • Update permissions using the KBA01020_Utility.exe.
  • Run the SA-Announce Configuration Utility.

Verify Local Admin Rights on SA-Announce Server

  1. Log in to the SA-Announce server.
  2. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
  3. Expand Configuration > Local Users and Groups.  Click Groups folder.
  4. Double-click Administrators group.
  5. Verify the user account is listed.
  • If the user account is not listed, the systems administrator will need to grant local admin rights.
  • Once permissions are granted, log out and back in to verify permissions.

Download and Run KBA01020_Utility.exe

Before You Begin

Verify you are running the proper SQL instance.

  1. Click Start > Run > Services.msc to open the service control panel.
  2. Look for the SQL service with the instance name of SYNAPPSENT.
  3. Do one of the following:
  • If SYNAPPSENT is present, you have the proper instance of SQL server and can proceed with running the utility.
  • If SYNAPPSENT is not found, you are running another instance of SQL server and this process will not work for you. Call Syn-Apps Support.

Run KBA01020_Utility.exe

If the proper instance of SQL server is found, follow the steps below.

  1. Download fix from http://www.syn-apps.com/downloads/Knowledge%20Base/KBA01020_Utility.exe and save it to any location on the SA-Announce server.
  2. Run KBA01020_Utility.exe.
  3. After the utility completes, run the SA-Announce Configuration Utility , Start > Programs > Syn-Apps > SA-Announce.
